Commission on Women's Social and Legal Condition - United Nations 2011 (UN Commission on the Status of Women 2011)

From February 24 to March 4 the 55th Session of the Commission on the Social and Legal Status of Women - United Nations 2011 will be held in New York. This year, the central topic is "Gender, Education, Science and Technology, and Employment" The event will be held in the United Nations Headquarters, and representatives of member countries, UN entities, and non-governmental organizations will attend. During the session various activities, debates, and panels will be carried out.

Principal topics of debate:
First Issue: Women and girls' access and participation in education, training, and science and technology, including promotion of equal access for women to full employment and decent work

Issue for Review: The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against girls

Emerging Issue: Gender quality and sustainable development

IN the framework of the 55th Session of the Commission on the Social and Legal Status of Women, the Huairou Commission - international network of networks headquartered in New York, specialized in gender problematics - together with its member networks (Federation of Municipalist Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, GROOTS International, International Council of Women, Information Center of the Independent Women's Forum, Latin America Women and Habitat Network, Women in Cities International, Women and Peace Network) organized three debate spaces:

Event: Re-imagining the right to cities: The Safe Cities Movement
Date: February 24
Time: 8:00-9:30 am
Place: Church Center, 8th Floor

Grassroots women, NGOs, academics, and architects will dialogue about violence against women in public spaces, and about how to build safer and more inclusive cites for women.

Event: Grassroots Speak Out on UN Women
Date: March 2, 10:00-11:30 am.
Place: Church Center, 8th Floor
Leaders of women's groups will discuss the influence of UN Women, its development, structure, and topics.

Event: Changing Climate, Changing Leadership: Grassroots Women Model Climate Resilient Development.
Date: February 23, 5:30-7:30 am.
Place: UN Delegates Dining Room
Grassroots women will describe the initiatives adopted by their organizations to adapt to and compensate for the consequences of climate change in the lives of women, working conditions, health, and general wellbeing.
